TLB: What should TLB readers know about Hygeia?
Kate: Hygeia’s number one goal is to support breastfeeding moms. We’re also committed to the environment, so all of our breast pumps are recyclable and, unlike most personal use pumps on the market, designed to be safely used by multiple moms. This means fewer breast pumps end up in landfills.
TLB: On the Hygeia website it states that Hygeia is WHO code compliant, why is this something that is important to Hygeia?
Kate: The WHO Code was established to protect mothers and babies worldwide from predatory and aggressive marketing of infant formula and breastmilk substitutes. We know that infant formula and bottle advertising affects breastfeeding rates and duration, so the WHO Code sets basic ethical guidelines for manufacturers. Our goal at Hygeia is to create products that encourage and support breastfeeding, so promoting the WHO Code is a important part of our core values as a company. TLB: When a breastfeeding mom is in the market for a new pump, how does she decide what kind of pump (manual, single electric, double electric, hospital grade, etc.) is right for her?
Kate: Choosing a pump can definitely be a daunting task! The first questions I would ask are how the mom plans to use the pump. Is she planning to go back to work full time? Is she pumping for a preemie? Is she wanting to have a small supply for occasional separations from baby? Regardless of pumping goals, I also recommend that all moms learn hand expression. Manual and single electric breast pumps are a good option for moms who don’t expect to be separated often from baby, but would like to express to have a small supply on hand for short-term separations. Again, hand expression can be a great alternative to the pump!
Double electric breast pumps are a good option for moms who are planning to go back to work full-time or have more frequent pumping needs (donating milk, etc.). In choosing a pump in this category, make sure to consider the pump’s warranty (a warranty of under a year is a red flag) and battery/car charger options if you don’t always expect to have electrical access. Another consideration is whether or not the pump is safe for multiple users, as many pumps in this category are designated “single user” and cannot be safely shared.
I recommend hospital grade breast pumps to moms who are initiating milk supply, pumping for premature/sick infants, or who aren’t responding well to consumer-grade breast pumps. These pumps are typically rented rather than purchased, and are designed for long-term heavy use by multiple moms.

This is such a great giveaway! I’m a working Mom and have to pump during the day to make sure my son can have breastmilk. It’s never easy but having a great pump always helps! I currently use a Medela (because my insurance carrier covered the cost of the pump and I didn’t have an option) but when a new Mom or new to breastfeeding/pumping Mom asks my opinion on what pump the should use, I always tell them they should purchase a Hygeia.

What a great looking piece of kit! Love that its not only ok to pass on to another mum who may not be in a position to carry on BF’ng if she’s going back to work, but recyclable too!! Looks great, discrete for taking to/from work and sounds very effective! I have to go back to work in a few weeks and would love a pump like this to take with me as my breaks are short and need to be as efficient as possible as I want to carry on nursing as long as DD (currently 17 weeks) wants to.

I would love to win this pump…I currently work full time and have a medela that I am not very happy with and I am pumping for my 3 month and hoping to make it to at least 1 year!
I’m due with my second in a month and plan to be a donor again after having donated over 31 gallons during my son’s first 13 months of life. I have dietary restrictions that have in the past made my milk a very good match for donating directly to some medically fragile babies and toddlers, and the closed-system pump just seems so much better for donating to children like that than my old and well-loved PiSA.
My pumping days are over (but I am still nursing my 2 year old!), so if I win the pump I would love to pass it along to a pumping mama in need of a good pump.

What an awesome product! I went through 2 Medela’s when I was pumping and donating due to an oversupply in 2008. Currently, I am a gestational surrogate due in March and plan on pumping full-time for the little one I’m carrying now. After a long struggle with BF, I am VERY PLEASED and EXCITED to say we have come SOOOOOO far– 7 months and many more will come…. though my expensive Medela pump may not make it that far!!! After thinking I sooo “needed” that thing, I just really hate using it. I have heard so many great things/reviews about this pump and I wish I had BEFORE I bought mine : ( Plus, it’s beautiful and everything about it sounds just a whole lot better and more detailed! I am expecting multiples in June and I would love this pump! Breastfed my 4 year old and 2 year old past their first birthdays, too.
Could sure use this…I’m an EPing mom for my fourth baby, born with a cleft lip and palate. I’m trying to get him to breastfeed now that we are post palate repair, but it’s slow going. Meanwhile, I have worn out a Freestyle and a Lansinoh, the pumps i was using at work and while on the go with my big and active family. I was planning to pump for 12 months, until he is two, but the pumps aren’t cooperating. I also give my extra to a friend with IGT. It’s all good.

Thank you so much for this giveaway! My son was born in June at 32 weeks. I was having complications from Pre-Eclampisa that was rapidly turning into Eclampisa. So he had to be delivered because he wasn’t gaining weight. While he was in the NICU I pumped with the Medela symphony pump when he got to come home I’ve been nursing and giving him the 2 formula supplements a day that the NICU Dr’s said he had to have. Well he has had some complications starting with a heart issue and then he was loosing weight and muscle mass and I was told he was too weak to nurse so the pediatric specialist switched him to a different formula and I have to pump breast milk and mix with his formula but we are not going to be able to rent the symphony pump any longer because my husband lost his job. It would be a total blessing to win this! Thank you again for the wonderful opportunity!

I would love to have this pump. My current pump PIS is on the fritz and will only allow me to pump one side at a time. I can not afford a new pump right now and I am pumping for 2 little ones and I would love to be done with the pumping sessions faster so I can spend time with my kiddos.
It is great to read about this pump and all of the tips. This is baby #3 for me. I have struggled to produce enough for my babies (weight gain issues). This time around I sem to be getting there. I have been a pumping fool to increase my milk. It would be great to have a better pump to help me along way. I go back to work in 3 weeks and hope to give my little man breastmilk for as long as I can keep up!

I have been researching pumps like crazy. I have tried a few Medela brands and the one I have been renting seems like it dies a little more each day. I am an exclusive pumping mama, since my lil man has been a poor latcher since birth – but i stuck with it and didnt give up, i was determined to breastfeed. This would be wonderful to have! I’ve been breastfeeding/pumping for my daughter for 16 months now and my Medela pump has never been really good at getting the milk out. I’ve managed to get enough to give her at daycare each day so far, but it’s always been a challenge.
I’m proud to have made it the 16 months and don’t have any plans to stop! This pump would be a big help and may even work better than the Medela!

I would really, really love to win this pump!! Pumping was a huge part of building and maintaining my supply during the first few months with my preemie. With my second on the way and due in February, now that I’m more educated about breastfeeding and pumps, I really don’t want to go back to the old pump I had used before.
I love this product and would def lime to have 1. Currently at my work there are over 6 mothers pumping and we all use the same station. We share info & advice & the Leaky website knowledge. We’re def for bfing & pumping in order to give our babies the nutrients they need. I would LOVE to have this to continue pumping for my son. We are trying to get to at least 2 yrs due to food allergies in our family. I have an ameda purely yours that is 10 years old(OMG I just realized it’s REALLY THAT OLD) and it doesn’t always work when I try pumping. I’m wondering if this pump could solve my low milk supply issues which have required us to rely on donations of milk for the past 7 months in addition to nursing and pumping. I would love to win this pump! I had to get rid of my first pump from my first two children, and now I’m without! I’m a single mother to three little girls and nursing my youngest. As of right now, I work one job full time, including overtime, and will be picking up a second job when my youngest is old enough to go to a sitter. Omg, what a wonderful pump! I have donated my bm to mother’s in need on hm4hb until my “mipump” (that was very cheap) stopped working…ugh! This would be a true gift to win! Our city is about to open a much needed brand new Breast Milk Bank! As I generally refer to myself as “the leaky boob”, I could have fed an army with my first – which I BF until she was 2.5 years and I became pregnant with my second. I was an exclusive pumper for 13 months since my son never latched on. I used the Medela Pump In Style and while I can’t complain about the pump itself, I did have issues battling staph and yeast throughout my entire pumping “relationship”. I am determined that the next kid will nurse, but in the even that that is not an option, I would like a different pump. I’m pretty sure the Medela kept reinfecting me. It has since been sent back to Medela for testing and I’m anxiously awaiting the results. 🙂

Great give away. I’m pumping for my 4 month old and plus I’m donating.
I would love to get a Hygeia pump. I bought a Medela PIS last time after being really lazy about research — It’s what everyone has, right?! — and have regretted it since. I’m an occasional pumper, but it still started falling apart after our first year (having used it maybe two dozen times? This annoyed me greatly, not to mention their lack of WHO compliance, among other things.
Could I do it all over again, I would get a Hygeia. But because I’m planning on being home with the new kiddo for the first several months (not working = no income), I can’t justify spending $300 on a nice, new top-of-the-line pump. I do want something for occasional separation, however, and for donating milk to moms in need. I had such an insane oversupply last time and if that happens again, I want to share the wealth.

I am expecting baby #2 while still breastfeeding baby #1. While I do plan on trying to tandem nurse, I feel that having an efficient breast pump will make it easier for my older child to still enjoy the benefits of breast milk while allowing his younger sibling to nurse on demand. I absolutely love how this pump is echo friendly and BPA free! I am pregnant with my second baby, and plan on nursing as long as I can. With my first we nursed, but she was very impatient so I ended up pumping most of the time. It is unfortunate that I didn’t have a pump as good as this one, because I personally feel if I did we could have nursed much longer than 4months. I wore my pump into the ground because I used it so much. I could only afford a bottom of the line pump that ended up leaking and dying on me :/

I would LOVE to win this pump! I need one for my 3rd nursling, due in June 2012! My first I didn’t need a pump, seeing as I stayed home and had nothing else to do. My 2nd I used a borrowed pump, didn’t need it that much because I could nurse with one hand and take care of my 2-year old with my other hand. However, this time around I will be nursing 1 handed and still be one hand short!! 🙂

As an IBCLC I LOVE Hygeia-they are the only WHO code compliant company. As a pumping mom, I want this pump badly! I have a Medela and it works well, but I’ve heard awesome things about this pump and would love to have a little extra to make a second donation to the milk bank!

Hi I would love to win this pump. I was just recently discharged from the hospital for sepsis from untreated mastitis (that I didn’t know I had) this past Monday (11/14) and while there I was away from my babies (tandem nursing 26mth old and 7mth old) for 3 days my supply has dropped immensely . I wasn’t given a pump to relieve my engorgement until the evening of day 2 it was a hand pump so it didn’t do the best job at draining me and so my supply dropped. I used to be able to pump 7-10oz a session and now if I’m lucky I get an 1-2oz. I’m currently supplementing with donated breast milk and using a rented pump from my local WIC office to help boost my supply. To win this pump would be such a financial blessing to my family.

Would love to win this pump. I have heard nothing but good things about Hygeia. I am a first time mom. My baby has had problems with his suck from the very beginning. As a result I have had to exclusively pump. I have been fortunate that the hospital loaned me a pump for free but now they are in need of it back. I desperately need a good quality pump to continue to nourish my baby. I definitely don’t want to have to use formula but I really can’t afford a good pump and whenever I have exclusively nursed my milk supply drops because my baby cannot empty my breast effectively.

I’d be honored to win since we accidentally “donated” my Medela Swing pump to Goodwill during our hectic move. /: I’ve have to pump with a Medela manual pump that is incredibly uncomfortable AND not efficiently extracting milk. So I use it to reduce swelling and my chances of mastitis more than maintaining a freezer supply. Thank you for this post and opportunity!

It would be phenomenal if i won this as i’m having such monumental problems establishing my supply from multiple hurdles, first, my baby was in NICU due to extremely high billirubin levels, then I almost died from sepsis infection from RPOC, heavy doses of antibiotics and surgury prohibited me from nursing for a month and being on EI my only option was to purchase a cost efficient pump, (read cheap) but you get what you pay for and the one i have is useless (please let me know if you’d like to know what brand)
my dream would be to stop having to supplement and i believe a pump of this magnitude and quality would help me re-establish my supply and omit formula once and for all and it’s exciting me more and more that you can adjust the speed and pressure control, and record baby’s noises to help with let down and the biggest bonus is that it’s even eco friendly/reusable!! shame on these “single” user pumps, i would feel so good to know that once i am finished with it I would be able to pass it on to another mum who befell the same lactating nightmares i have as i am still trying and still have hope that i can exclusively nourish my baby solely with my own milk
I would even be willing to document my experience on a day to day/week to week basis for the opportunity to win this pump but most of all for the opportunity to be able to exclusively breast milk feed my precious baby.

the opportunity to win this would be such a timely blessing, i have been severly struggling to establish my supply with so many hurdles, first my son was in NICU due to high billirubin levels, and the hospital pushed formula on me saying that he needed as much as possible to expel the toxins, then i fell ill due to RPOC which i now know causes problems with supply, i almost died from massive blood loss/hemmoraging and a severe sepsis infection, requiring me to be on heavy dose of 4 antibiotics for over a month and being on ei was only able to purchase a cost efficient (read cheap) which is weak, useless and does not work well at all-it takes me over 30 minutes of double pumping to get a lousy 2-3 oz…and it does not drain me at all, i can still hand express another 2oz after!!
i now know you get what you pay for!!
my dream would be to be able to increase my supply and stop supplementing this opportunity is so exciting to me as a pump of this grade and quality could surely help increse my supply and abolish the bottle~!~ and the fact that it has multiple speed and pressure controls is phenomenal! and that there is a feature to record your baby’s noises would defenately help with let down and is so innovative!!! but the best part is that this is not a single use pump! i think that’s fantastic, i can only imagine all the pumps that end up in landfills, i would be so honored to be able to pass this on to another mum who has faced such horrible obsticals as i have once i finish with it it’s just so ground breaking and well overdue! i am not giving up, i still have hope that i can continue to nourish my baby with just breastmilk alone one day…. i would even be willing to document overcoming my struggles with breastfeeding and successes with using this pump for the opportunity to be able to use one of this caliber this pump sounds exactly what the lactating mothers of the world have been waiting for

I would love a new pump. I have low milk supply due to IGT and a good pump would be great to keep up my milk supply once we hit a year, even if she starts nursing less often.
