TLB:  What are the underlying values that inspire Fairhaven Health’s customer service?  Does Fairhaven Health have a mission statement regarding their customer service?

Sarah:   A huge focus for us at Fairhaven Health is customer service. Making great products is important, of course, but we also feel strongly that we need to be present and available for our customers. In talking with many, many women every day who are struggling with, or curious about, reproductive health issues, we are constantly reminded that lots of women are not getting the information they need within the medical community, or in some cases, they simply don’t know what questions to ask.  And, while we are not doctors, we can offer a very compassionate listening ear, and we can point women to lots of resources where they can find the information and support they are looking for.  So, while we don’t have an “official” mission statement regarding our customer service, our entire team shares a genuine desire to support women (by providing encouragement and information) before and during pregnancy, and while they are breastfeeding.

TLB:  What are the different ways that someone could get in contact with someone at Fairhaven Health?

Sarah:  We try to make it as easy as possible for our customers to get in contact with us. If you call our office during the regular work day, you are almost guaranteed to get a live person on the 1st or 2nd ring. We also have a Live Chat feature on our website, which is a quick way for customers to inquire about products and orders. Customers can also email our customer service team or post comments and questions on Facebook. We work hard to respond to every voice message, email, and Facebook post that we receive within 24 hours. And, another cool thing . . . Ovagraph.com, our FREE fertility charting website and forum. We currently have over 50,000 members at OvaGraph.com – an awesome and supportive community of women charting their fertility and interacting in forums (with experienced moderators) on a variety of reproductive health topics.

TLB:  What should someone expect to experience when they get in contact with Fairhaven Health?

Sarah: The things we hope to convey through our customer service are honesty, sincerity, and compassion. Is the customer concerned about her husband’s fertility? If so, then she deserves to know what options are available for assessing his fertility status, and what natural products are available to help promote male reproductive health. Is the customer returning to work and worried about how she will maintain her breast milk supply? She deserves a compassionate listening ear, and a few tips and recommendations about pumping. Did we ship the wrong product? If so, then the customer deserves an honest apology and a sincere effort to get the correct product shipped out immediately. Simply put, we hope to create a customer service environment where women feel safe asking questions and sharing their struggles.

TLB:  What have you learned through your interactions with people calling in for help or information?

Sarah: Making babies and taking care of babies is hard work! And, even though pregnancy and breastfeeding are normal physiological processes, fertility, pregnancy wellness, and breastfeeding success are not guaranteed. When issues arise, women crave information, support and encouragement . . . which is why the phones at Fairhaven Health keep ringing and why the community at The Leaky Boob continue to thrive.

  1. LLL really got me through my breastfeeding relationship with my first baby (now 3.5 and still nursing, tandem with her 11 month old brother). I never imagined how getting together just to talk with other moms could have impacted my life!

  2. I was surprised to find my small town had a facebook community dedicated to breastfeeding- MAC TLC (McMinnville The Lactation Club). I’ve received support from them, a few tips and tricks along the way as well.

  3. Erin Ritter says

I haven’t received information from any unlikely places, it just so happens that one of my good friends is a La Leche Leader so I go straight to her for help 🙂

  4. Jessica Hoover says

I have had elderly folks stop and encourage me a few times while I was breastfeeding in public.

  5. Infertility runs in my husbands family and we have found help in some unusual ways. Facebook, and pinterest has been a great source of comfort beacuse it has allowed us to connect with others in our situation that dont live near us. I also have found support with a lady who bags our groceries at the super market. It was a chance meeting but she has been such a blessing in our lives.

  6. Blogs like The Leaky Boob and others are great sources of breastfeeding tips

  7. Mostly from the web. I do alot of research & am grateful for sites like yours that offer support. Some of my friends have also been pretty supportive.

  8. What an awesoem company.

  9. Jenny Travis says

I’ve had support for breastfeeding since day one from just about every person I’ve come across. I guess that’s the surprise since I had been given the impression breastfeeding would be a battle. My son is nearly 2 and we’re still going strong!

  10. Online forums. I have made lifelong friends there with a wealth of information.

  11. For me the most surprising support came at the hospital. All of the doctors and nurses were very helpful during my stay. I had a c-section and had expected people to suggest that I wasn’t up to breastfeeding or that I would need to supplement as it would take longer for my milk to come in. Not a single person suggested that. They just spent a lot of time making sure I knew what I was doing and that I could ask for help.

  12. My coworkers are so supportive about trying to get pregnant. That has been such a pleasant surprise for me.

  13. I have never heard of them before but now I am definitely interested in checking out their website!

  14. Sounds like great stuff!

  15. I have found support at la leche league meetings and with friends, A woman gave me support while we were vacationing in Hawaii,

  16. My online birth month group

  17. My husband and mother are very supportive, as are my online friends from our baby month board.

  18. My husband is a huge suuport! Also going through trials and failures with my 1st born/c-section/and breastfeeding woes. Lucy Eades, The Leaky B@@b, Breast is Best and Fairhaven Health have all played a major role in my now success story of a natural home birth and breastfeeding awesomeness. I now EBF my 2nd child, pump for my toddler and pump to donate!!!! 🙂

  19. The LLL in my hometown 🙂 As well, online support groups have been amazing!

  20. The birth center where I had my first baby was incredibly supportive (Sacred Birth Place in Oakland, CA). We had monthly support meetings for pregnant or nursing families where I was exposed to the idea of nursing full term. It was also the first place I had ever really seen breastfeeding. It was great for me to have a place to nurse openly and comfortably in order to boot my confidence around breastfeeding so I could do it wherever I needed. My daughter is nearing three and still nursing and we have another due in a few weeks.

  21. The internet has been my most encouraging resourceful site of info. Between your site and kelleymom.com! I don’t know many people personally who do or have breastfed so internet is where I get encouragement!

  22. I work with a lot of women and we constantly talk breast feeding! I work at a veterinary hospital.

  23. My husband has been surprisingly supportive! He didn’t like the idea of me breastfeeding past 1 year but we are now at 25 months with our daughter and expecting another and he thinks it’s amazing!

  24. Michelle Garcia says

Storytime at my local library. I am the children’s assistant at a public library and coordinate Baby story time. When I came back from maternity leave, several of my moms asked about my daughter and if I breastfed. I do, and it sparked up a continuous conversation of how to store breastmilk, pumping at work, sleep habits for breastfed babies, and what kinds of home remedies are used to produce more milk. Lots of cookie recipes have been passed around. =) I was so surprised and glad my moms opened up to me, it’s made us more connected.

  25. I haven’t really gotten any breast feeding information from any unlikely places. I had twins in September and the hospital was great teaching me how to feed them at the same time. Not such an easy task! My doctor said many twin moms give up on breast feeding early but I am determined to do it.

  26. I’ve had quite a few people come to me while I was shopping and breastfeeding to give me support. That’s always suprising!
