The Dairy Fairy’s Magical Giveaway

TDF_SigStack_Coral_RGB

Some of us know we are destined to be mothers, and from a young age Emily Ironi knew she wanted a family.  So when she turned 40 and was still single, Emily realized that she had to take matters into her own hands.  With the help of IVF and donor sperm she became a lucky mother to an adorable girl named Arden.  Emily vowed that she would never complain, be the best mother she could be and try to support other breastfeeding mothers.

Not long after the arrival of Arden, Emily gave birth to her second “baby”, The Dairy Fairy.  A company with a goal to beautifully help mothers provide breast milk to their babes.  According to Emily, the Leaky Boob was a great source of support during her breastfeeding journey and so it only seems natural to share the nursing and pumping bra that she developed – the “Arden” bra – with fellow Leakies.  The Arden was created  so that nursing mothers could more easily multitask, efficiently and beautifully.

ImageTLB:  What inspired you to start The Dairy Fairy?

Emily:  My daughter Arden, of course.  She has been the inspiration for everything I do.   She waltzed into my life on February 10, 2012.  At the time, I owned a luxury handbag business and was working from home.  I quickly realized that it took serious juggling between the unfortunate daily pumping, keeping my biz running, and my daughter happily nourished.  And I was stunned by the options for moms who wanted  or needed  to pump AND nurse.  I was spending at least an hour a day changing in and out of nursing and pumping bras.  This was time I just didn’t have to spare.  And I thought that there had to be some solution that was more flattering to a woman whose body had just gone through some major changes.  After some research, I realized that I just had to solve this problem and The Dairy Fairy was born, 6 months after Arden.

BW Black frontTLB:  What would you like TLB readers to know about your nursing bra?

Emily:  If there’s one takeaway about the Arden nursing bra, it’s that it multitasks as much as moms do.  It can be a nursing bra, and it’s also a hands-free pumping bra.  On top of that, it’s adjustable.  Each side can be closed on one of the 5 links, which gives you the ability to tighten or loosen the fit based on your fullness level.  When I pumped 4-6oz from my breast, I could literally feel the empty space in my nursing bra.  Or, when I was engorged, I felt like I was busting out of the top.  And since each side is independent, it’s also perfect for moms like me, with disproportionately sized breasts (my leftie was a C, and the righty was a B).  So I wanted to create a perfect fit for all moms, regardless of the size and shape of their breasts (the Arden is sized XS-XL and covers 32A all the way to a 42G).

And because each side can be used independently, you can even nurse on one side and pump on the other, which helps with simultaneous feeding and stockpiling.

But the biggest task that the Arden fulfills is that it’s beautiful.  It IS the kind of bra you want to wear all day.  It’s flattering and comfortable and doesn’t make you feel like it’s a hospital mammary contraption.  My body was never going to be the same, but that didn’t mean I had to stop feeling and looking attractive.

BW Blush pumpingTLB:  What is the inspiration behind your name?

Emily:  It took a lot of brainstorming to end up with The Dairy Fairy.  I wanted something memorable, catchy, and a bit tongue in cheek.  It’s not meant to be literal, Fairies don’t really exist! (or do they?).

At the end of the day, it had to fit me, and my humor and sensibilities.

TLB:  What is your favorite breastfeeding or pumping  tip?

Emily:  When Arden would get a little fussy, or didn’t want to latch, it was always  helpful to put a little milk on my nipple… it definitely woke up her appetite.  I also sang a little ‘breastfeeding song’ that I made up, that basically went “milky milky milky, milky milky milky” (to the tune of itsy bitsy spider).  So when I started to sing the song, she knew it was feeding time, and now that she’s a toddler I still give her that as a cue that it’s time for some milk.

I tried to nurse on demand as much as possible, but when I had to pump, I found it very useful to carry sample or travel size bottles of dishwashing liquid so I could clean my flanges on the spot, rather than carry dirty equipment around.
