TLB:  Followers of The Leaky Boob know My Baby’s Heartbeat Bear as a sponsor that cares about moms, and the beautiful bond that they have with their babies.  Could you remind our Leakies about the furry products you carry?

Purusha: Yes! We carry Heartbeat Animal kits for expectant mothers to record their baby’s heartbeat and create a unique pregnancy keepsake. Each kit comes with an adorable stuffed animal and heart shaped recorder.

TLB:  You now carry a couple of new items in your store in support of midwives.  Could you tell us about those?

Purusha:  We just added our exclusive “SAVE the Midwives” Babyhawk Mei Tai and “I <3 My Midwife” Heartbeat Bear kit!

TLB:  What inspired you to start carrying the “Save the Midwives” Mei Tai and T-shirt wearing bear?

Purusha:  Last year I had a homebirth. Except it wasn’t in my own home. Where I live midwives are not legally allowed to accompany a woman giving birth in her home. So I was forced to find a place out of state to have my baby.  In fact, this is happening all over the country. I was lucky enough to have an amazing Midwife that offered her home to me and she is the reason I created these products.

TLB:  What was your experience like working with a midwife?

Purusha:  It was a wonderful experience. She gave me the emotional, physical, and spiritual support I needed during my pregnancy and the birth of my 10 lb. baby boy!

TLB:  Is there anything else that you would like our Leakies to know about My Baby’s Heartbeat Bear or your “Save the Midwives” products?

Purusha:  A portion of every sale is donated to the Save the Midwife legal fund. We all deserve the right to choose how and where we give birth. It’s time we help SAVE the Midwives.

Trust your body and know that if your Midwife is there for you every step of the way.

  2. sherry blamer says

I dont know if id have any advice I would just tell them way to go. A midwife will definatly let you have a more natural birth not that a doctor wouldnt but they tend to be more open to natural birth methods.

  3. So far I’m really enjoying my experience with midwives – they care so much more for me and baby than the doctors that I’ve seen!

  4. MyChau Brikshavana says

I went to a traditional doctor with my first and I am now going to a midwife for support in doing a VBAC. I don’t have any advice, but I can say that my midwife had been very supportive of all the different options that I have.

  5. Do it! There’s nothing better than care that focuses on you and your individual needs rather than liability and regulations and everything else they’re focused on in a hospital.

  6. Midwives are awesome!!

  7. Amanda perry says

Just go to a midwife! Ive had OBs and Midwife care and the difference in caring is astounding!

  8. Sheila Atkins says

To get the best advice about anything pregnancy and birth related, get my daughter’s opinion.

  9. ask a gajillion questions because they’re the best people to answer them!!!! an ob will give you cut and dry out of a textbook. a midwife will have a conversation! ive had both and i’ll never go back to the factory farm version of prenatal care!

  10. Trust your body, and ask question! A good midwife wants you to be an informed patient.

  11. Christine Adams says

    Education and support are key!

  12. Jessica Parent says

A Midwife is just as good as a doctor and in my opinion better because they seem to have moms and babies best interest at heart (and natural labor preferred) not the hospitals money making agendas

  13. Choose a midwife that you are comfortable with. She is going to be your guide thru an amazing time you must trust them completely. I wanted someone everloving and someone with a firm guidance because I knew what I needed during labor. Think abour what you’ll need during that tough, wonderful and emotional time.

  14. A midwife is just as awesome as any other dr! But way more personal!

  15. Amanda Selenke says

Be open to suggestions, they are amazing and can help you have a great birth. Mine kept suggesting different laboring positions, but I was hesitant to move because the contractions were so strong. Once I did it made a huge difference. I loved that I could trust her guidance and she helped make my birth as comfortable as possible.

  16. Have had both midwives and docs. Depends on the person, and how you interact with them.

  17. Love my Midwives! Anything to support their efforts. 🙂

  18. Jonnie Fry says

A midwife will help you to know what your body can do as well as help you have the experience you want.

  19. Choose a midwife that you’re on the same page as. If you want somebody who is more hands-on, look for that. If you want somebody who will sit back and let you do your own thing, then find a midwife like that. You don’t want somebody who either leaves you feeling abandoned or smothered. (though a good midwife could figure out what you need, but just be sure). 🙂

  20. Victoriana says

If you’re still in the fence about hiring a midwife I reccomend reading stories of births with midwives & researching whatever it is you’re unsure about. But most importantly do what makes you feels most comfortable!

  21. Autumn Blair says

Do it! You have the right to choose who you feel is looking out for your best interest, believe in yourself.

  22. Ashley Walsh says

I had a midwife and she was amazing! I wish everyone had a good supportive midwife for all their births 🙂 and a doula, because doulas are also amazing.

  23. Amanda Leach says

My advice would be to trust your instinct, and listen to your midwife. Even if she has you doing something you think is crazy.

  24. Whatever you decide, I hope it’s a beautiful experience

  25. Hannah Palmer says

My advice to someone considering a midwife is to just give it a chance and if you don’t feel comfortable it doesn’t mean ALL midwives aren’t for you, it just means THAT midwife isn’t a match for you.

I had my heart set on a midwife and a water birth from day one. When I ended up having complications that prevented those things I was heartbroken. The midwives I had been seeing continued to help me and check up on me even though they wouldn’t be delivering my baby and I was no longer paying for their services. The little time I had with them was such an incredible experience.

  26. Amanda Temple says

I have not used a midwife, but I think my advice would be the same as who you pick as your doctor. Just find someone you are comfortable with and do your research!

  27. I had a midwife home birth and recommend them to all low risk women. <3

  28. In my experience with two babies, hospital midwives are a bit different than homebirth midwives. You’ll want to shop around if you can (in my area there isn’t much choice and no working at home midwives), and meet with practitioners to find the person you connect with the most. You won’t have a satisfying birth experience if you can’t connect or feel comfortable with your practitioner.

  29. Midwifes are very caring and personal. I saw one throughout my pregnancy but did not have a choice to have one for my birth of my little girl. I wish I did.

  30. Births are so very personal ~ I cannot imagine birthing three children with someone who didn’t see me as capable and felt the need to lessen the experience by treating me like a sick person n need of intervention. For me midwives assist the woman in becoming the mother she is innately meant to be.

  31. Julie Bartlett says

Find someone you feel 110% comfortable with and trust your body.

  32. I love this! I live in a state where midwives are very limited and thus am using a practice over the state line. I absolutely want to save the midwives!

  33. I labored for 2 days and delivered naturally with the support of 4 midwives and a doula. I am certain under anyone else’s care, I would have had a medical intervention. I will be forever grateful!

  34. i loved my midwife experience. It was way better than with a GP and an OBGYN which I have had both with my other two. I am so thankful for my midwife. I can say if while we live here I were to have another one I would totally go back to her!!

  35. If you want a personal experience a midwife and doula combo is the way to go!

  36. your midwife will trust you and your body for what it is meant to do

  37. I <3 my midwife!

  38. Also: don’t be afraid to ask questions, LOTS OF THEM, early on so you can help yourself be fully informed. I am a high-risk pregnancy (second time mama) with a history of loss, pre-term labor with my first and I was terrified about what the midwives at our practice would think of everything. But they’ve been far more patient, informative and encouraging than my OB ever was. I am so grateful to them, but I went in with an open mind, got all the information I needed then made the decision as to what I felt best suited my needs and wants. I have no regrets! 🙂

  39. If I had any advice for a new mother considering the midwife I would tell them to do the research and get recommendations. I had a homebirth and I love my midwife but I searched for her and did my due diligence

  40. Find the right midwife for you. Having the right fit for your whole family can make all the difference.

  41. Relax! Birthing with midwives is natural and empowering. Realize that it’s about you AND your baby not you OR your baby 🙂

  42. I Definitely recommend using a midwife. Your child’s birth will be a deeply personal and special thing for the rest of your life. Midwives are far more in tune to you as a person rather than you as a patient, and generally will be open to what you want your birth experience to be like. I’m even signing up for midwifery school, because mine made such an impact on me, I want to be able to do the same for others.

  43. Look into personality as much as experience and ability. Birth is such a personal experience…you need someone who makes you feel comfortable and respects your wishes, as well as someone capable of handling it and helping you when things don’t go as planned.

  44. I would tell them to interview them to find one that they get along with and feel comfortable around.

  45. Janet Pratt says

Midwives are amazing. It was like having my best friend attend to my pregnancy and deliver my beautiful boy. Everyone should have a midwife!
