#LeakyLooks: Get Outside And GO!

This week with our #TLBMoves campaign we’re focusing on getting outside and I thought it’d be fun to show some creative ways to get moving outside! From Summer Vacations, Evening BBQ, to a beautiful morning of Yoga In the Park-these looks are designed for the breastfeeding mama in mind! Wherever you move, we want to make sure you are equipped with a put-together look that inspires you to live this summer to the fullest!

Like what you see? Got a boob-friendly outfit you want to share with us? Pin, RePost, share the looks or YOUR LOOK on Instagram or Pinterest and TAG us using our #LeakyLooks hashtag! We’d LOVE to inspire our fellow Leakies with fresh ideas and ways to put their best breast forward! 😀

Yoga In The Park

Yoga In The Park

Yoga in the Park may be one of my most favorite things, ever. Now, trying to do it with 4 kids under 7 may not be quite so relaxing, so this is definitely a “by personal situation” advice 😉 I centered this great layered look around the Belabumbum Hoodie Wrap (great for those cooler mornings outside!) and their bright pink Nursing Racerback Cami! The cami has a great hidden panel that sits right underneath your breasts and makes it easy to fold up and down wherever you are practicing your savasana. I had to include Eyla’s Eco Vessel Water Bottle in Lotus and some sunscreen. Because mornings tend to be a bit harsher in the UVA/UVB rays, you want to make sure you and your baby’s skin is protected!

Summer Party BBQ

Summer BBQ

Summer BBQs can be so much fun! A game of horseshoes, drinks on the lawn, conversations under a giant awning, and the best grilled kabobs to celebrate high summer! This dress from Modcloth is a great “breast-friendly” dress as it buttons down the front AND is lightweight and can be dressed up OR down! Pair this dress with a pair of floral wedges (sturdy, ties your outfit together, and comfy!) and a fantastic Amy Michele diaper bag to pull your look together. Need some lightweight and breathable support? I found this delicious Belabumbum Tallulah Lace Nursing Bra that perfectly fits the criteria! Don’t forget the sunscreen for you and baby-and finish this look off with a GORGEOUS wrap or ring sling like this exclusive Tekhni woven wrap for The Leaky Boob designed after Jessica’s tattoo sleeve! This wrap will ONLY be available for purchase at the MiLK conference in LA!

Summer Jet Setter Mama

Summer Jet Setter Mama

Some of us have some summer vacations planned this summer-that may or may not involve airline travel! I immediately wanted to put together a look that was simple, travel-able, comfortable, and willing to stand up to easy flight transfers and baby or toddler needs, and still feel fabulous and not weighed down with too much “stuff.” This look is put together using a lightweight button-down Chambray shirtdress from Maurices, an easy camel wedge from Toms, and this gorgeous NEW Tula carrier called “enDEERing”! Belabumbum has a GREAT cotton-based bra called the Lotus Nursing Bra that I had to include. One of the softest and most breathable bras out there. You’ll need to stay well-hydrated on the plane and going to and fro, so Eyla’s Eco Vessel water bottles are a great choice! Ju-Ju-Be’s Be Prepared diaper bags are one of the BEST ways to organize all of your must-brings for you and baby!

#LeakyLooks: Where Do YOU Move?

We have the privilege of crossing paths with so many unique Leakies as we join together in community! This month as we celebrate #TLBMoves and get moving, I wanted to have a little more fun with some of the diversity we encounter when we go about our days! As some of you may know, I’m a nerd…like, Comic Con Nerd. (Nerd heaven for those of you who don’t speak geek!).  My little family also likes to trek around the great outdoors (ahem…though I’d like to go glamping one of these days. Feather bed out in the sticks? With a wood stove? In a canvas tent? Don’t judge. I’m serious. :P). I’ve also begun officially working out with my partner of 10 years and we’re seeing such good results in being intentionally active! I think you guys are gonna LOVE these #LeakyLooks!

So: Wanna do something AWESOME? Head on over to Instagram, use #TLBMoves and #LeakyLooks and post a picture of how YOU like to jam! We’d LOVE to feature you! Is it a breastfeeding-friendly Cosplay? Your FAVORITE camping get-up? Your newest Yoga ensemble? Show us! Let’s inspire our Leakies!!!! #BoobOutFashion #TLBMoves #LeakyLooks #MyLeakyFashion

Comic Con Mom

ComicCon Mama

SDCC2015 has come and gone, but us nerd mamas are still proudly wearing our geeked-out faves! Who says we can’t breastfeed and wear our babies in our Nerd finery? We say you CAN! I centered this look around passing on our nerd-genes with the new Tula “Sidekick” carrierBelabumbum’s Lena Peek-A-Boo Nursing Bra keeps you comfortable and fantastic walking those aisles of Con-exclusive merch, and pairing a ThinkGeek vintage Wonderwoman t-shirt with a vintage Marvel Comic shoulder bag completes this Cool mama look ready to conquer even the esteemed Hall H!

Hit The Barre

Hit the Barre

Every mama could use some more balance and strength in their life! This look is featuring our MiLK Conference Tekhni Wovens EXCLUSIVE wrap in “Tuxedo” designed from Jessica Martin-Weber’s beautiful tattoo artwork on her skin to honor her fight with Hyperemesis Gravidarum. I added in the extremely comfy Belabumbum Yoga Jogger Pant along with their NEW Sporty Mesh Nursing Bra! (seriously. no one needs boob sweat crampin’ their Barre style!) Some soft, disposable bamboo-based nursing pads from Bamboobies help with any potential nursing leakage, and a strong recycled glass water bottle from Eylas is going to help you stay hydrated as you work towards getting strong and balanced!

Camp Your Heart Out

Camp Your Heart Out

Who says you can’t be CUTE and prepared while you camp with your baby? Get ready to rock the great outdoors with Tula “Campy” and all of the chemical-free ThinkBaby Sunscreen you can slather on! Mountain Mama crafts well-made outdoor gear specifically for the hiking and camping mama! And no trip into nature is quite complete without a triple-insulated Eco-Vessel Boulder Bottle from Eylas-keeping hot OR cold liquids/soups at their temps for HOURS.

We hope you loved this week’s #LeakyLooks! Make sure to tag us on Instagram and show us what you’re dressed in today! We may just feature you and inspire all of our mamas! Let’s get our #TLBMoves on!

#TLBMoves: Kelsey’s Story-Changing Her Life to Inspire Others

by Kelsey Daniels

*Editor’s Note: I have had the pleasure of being close friends with Kelsey and her family over the past few years as our two families have grown! I hope that her story inspires you, Leaky. She has been instrumental in encouraging me to  jumpstart taking care of myself with #TLBMoves. When I became a mom, it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. But to be honest, I kind of lost myself.

I devoted 100% of my time into taking care of my three little boys.

I completely forgot to take care of myself.

Beginning and Current: Kelsey’s Journey!

I used my kids as an excuse for not taking care of my body.I was too busy, too tired, and felt too far gone to do anything about it.

I was surviving motherhood, and not enjoying it at all.

Finally, I decided it was no longer okay for me to use my kids as an excuse to be 50+ lbs. overweight and 11692749_10152852661372100_6381956419378480368_neat nothing but junk. It was time for change. I started eating well, working out daily, and had a killer group of friends to hold me accountable to my goals.

I quickly fell in love with taking care of my body, and my kids quickly took notice! I now feel good about what I’m putting in my body, and I don’t feel guilty when I nurse my little Samson, because I know he’s getting the very best things from me. It’s been just over three months and I’ve lost 25lbs and over 23 inches.

It’s so wonderful to know I’m making my way towards a healthier me, but the best part?

I’ve found myself again.

I matter.

And my family is benefitting from me being well cared for!

I’ve found time in my day just for ME, and it’s amazing how thats affected being a mom, wife, and friend.

I am now the example to my kids that I feel good about.11137182_10152859116892100_8961811249812096667_n

They are my reason why, not my excuse!

I did it.

I’m still doing it.

YOU CAN DO THIS.

Together we can change!

From This Leaky To You,

-Kelsey

Get Your Move On- Family Style #TLBmoves with Tula Baby Carriers

Active family, babywearing, Tula Baby Carriers

Hey Leakies, let’s get moving!

We’re not going anywhere in particular but we are journeying toward health, activity, and awareness. Not as isolated individuals, but as a family, a community. With each other and with our kids, we’re taking steps to get more movement in our lives. That movement may be a dance party in the living room, a daily walk at the park, hitting the gym, including more veggies, setting up the blender for more healthy homemade smoothies, you name it, you define what #TLBmoves looks like for you.

It all began in August 2014 with the first ever #TLBmoves and it took off. Some of us got a little more movement in our lives, others got a whole lot more. We cheered on some working on (and succeeding) quitting smoking, others had step goals to hit, there were those that started yoga or crossfit or pilates every day, and others started having salads every day. Getting moving together brought us closer together and we discovered that thanks to the global village of the internet, we could cheer each other on and have fun in the process. When we found ourselves stuck, we could be honest about the challenges we were facing and there would be no judgment, just support and encouragement. It was inspiring and we all wanted to keep moving.

Many of us did, though our interactions weren’t as frequent with the start of school and as colder weather rolled in, many of us found ways to keep going. And here we are, nearly a year later, and we’re still moving. The push we all got from the month of #TLBmoves was motivating and we felt it was time to do it again and invite more to join us.

As parents, we have every reason in the world to be physically active; heart health, longevity, reduced health problems, strength, endurance, lower blood pressure, stronger bones, joint health, mental clarity, better sleep, and decrease in depression and anxiety to name a few. With having children though, juggling family, home, and for some, work, getting to exercise is often an overwhelming challenge. Between the media, “experts,” bloggers, friends, family, health care providers, and yes, even myself saying what is so important for children, there are just so many other aspects of a child’s development that require my attention. There is every reason in the world to not be physically active; reading to our children, providing quality meals, addressing their social needs, researching all medications/foods/education, shopping to have the “best” deals on the highest quality, spending quality play time with our children, limiting screen time, grooming them, keeping house, bonding, learning and executing proper child passenger safety (installing that perfect car seat that took 3 weeks of research and a small loan to purchase), and being sure every minute of their every day is filled with only the best developmentally appropriate activities. With all that’s on our plates, how do we find time to be physically active?

We have perfectly legit reasons to not be moving and perfectly inspiring reasons to get moving.  It’s not easy sometimes but it’s definitely worth it.

My motivation is my kids. I want to be around for a long time to be with my children and eventually my grandchildren and I can’t afford to wait to get started. They inspire me and not only for my own health, but for the health of my whole family. And now they’ve inspired me to share that motivation with you!

It’s time for #TLBmoves!

And I hope you’ll get moving with me for your own reasons.

Are you a runner? Walker? Cross-fit fan?  Couch potato looking to change? Or maybe you just want to be screen-free a little more often.

Whatever your goal, you can join us for #TLBmoves!  This is all about embracing an active lifestyle and making healthier choices, no matter where you’re starting from and we’re here to support each other completely free of judgment each step of the way.

We have a team to help provide some inspiration, not with before and after pictures, #TLBmoves isn’t about acquiring a certain body aesthetic, but with honest sharing of the journey. Kids in tow and personal goals put out there, our team isn’t to glamorize the journey, simply to share together one step at a time.

#TeamTLBmoves! Meet the five mamas who will be sharing their #TLBmoves journeys during the month of July:

Jessica: Founder, owner, and author of The Leaky Boob Facebook group and website; mother of six girls, ages 3, 5, 7, 12, 14, and 16.

Jeanna: guidance counselor and mom to a 6 month old little girl.

Kileah: Member of TLB’s editorial team; mother of four children, ages 7, 5, 3 and 19 months. Kileah loves canning, cooking, and being with her family.

Iola: Mom of Cadden, Lyam, and Eli all under 5 living in Minnesota but visiting Wisconsin regularly. Iola works out of her home, blogs here, and is a doula and advocate for improving breastfeeding rates in the black community.

Brianne: work from home mom of 3 children, ages 11, 6, and 3 years old. Brianne is married to a fitness enthusiast but has struggled to find time for herself to do the same.

Meet our partners:

#TLBmoves is a big undertaking and we are so thrilled to be working with brands we believe in to bring you this event. Our partners really want to see moms getting active and enjoying a healthy lifestyle with their families! We’ll be sharing tons of photos of #TeamTLBmoves using gear from the following brands:

thinkbaby thinksport

Thinkbaby and ThinksportIt’s July, so the weather is hot. A big part of #TLBmoves is getting active outdoors (work that natural vitamin D!). A good, safe sunscreen is a necessity. Thinkbaby and Thinksport care as much as we do when it comes to keeping our families safe from harmful chemicals. We’re keeping sunburns at bay, minus the endocrine disruptors!

When?
#TLBmoves will run from July 1st-31st, 2015, but we hope you’ll keep moving long after the end of the month! (We may have something up our sleeves to that end, too!)

How?
Participation is on the honor system. Counting steps can be fun, but the point isn’t a number (on a pedometer, scale, or otherwise) – it’s making healthy choices and becoming more active in general. It’s all about feeling good! Moms can track their activity via whatever means they choose. (You can use a FitBit, another pedometer, you can time three five-minute songs for a dance party in your living room – it’s up to you!)

Where?
Anyone, anywhere can participate! We’ll be announcing some fun prizes from our brand partners, and those are limited to the United States at this time, but the world is your oyster if you want to get active with us!

JOIN OUR PRIVATE FACEBOOK GROUP (Please note: this is a co-ed community where you’ll find support as we get active and make healthy choices together. Judgement free! Come as you are, this group is your #TLBmoves tribe!)

Who?
You, your friends, your kids, your partner, your boss, your mom, your dad… anyone!  Though The Leaky Boob is focused on encouraging families primarily through breastfeeding, we support breastfeeding moms and everyone that supports them.  Breastfeeding isn’t a requirement to participate with TLB and #TLBmoves.

We’ll have more updates soon – in the meantime, please follow TLB on Instagram to keep up with #TLBmoves. Use the hashtag #TLBmoves on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to share your pics. We want to see what you’re doing to MOVE, mamas!

One of the biggest things we want to encourage each other to do is to MOVE. Whatever you’re doing! Not just sports or working out, but PLAYING, Hiking, having FUN with your family, making better choices that help you thrive in the season of parenting you are in! I hope you love these collections I’ve picked out for you this week! Don’t forget to show us YOUR #LeakyLooks this week on Instagram and Facebook! Tag us and inspire us (and I’d LOVE to feature your look!).

Day On The Lake

A Day At The Lake

Our family spent a day at a local lake (we have a LOT of them here, in the PNW!) and gosh, it was GREAT! Here I have a GREAT adjustable Shake Maternity Nursing Tankini from Mommy Gear paired with one of my FAVORITE Ju-Ju-Be Tokidoki bags! Having a lightweight, easy to get on-and-off water sling from Beachfront Baby Wraps is a MUST for enjoying the cool water with your baby! Thinkbaby suncreen in SPF50+ has ALSO been an essential for our family! We all have pretty fair skin and BURN like nobody’s business and this is one of the ONLY non-toxic EWG-recommended suncreens on the market that works and doesn’t give my little ones rashes (a problem we’ve had with so many other “safe” brands!). I finished this look off with some fabulous Chewbeads and a pair of sunnies from H&M and voila! You’re ready for Sun, Water, Play and getting your #TLBMoves on!

Marathon Mama

Marathon Mama

I am so excited to feature this look based off of this Belabumbum Nursing Racerback Cami specifically designed to be nursing-friendly AND high quality activewear! I have short hair, which makes using a Bolder Band from Simply Carried a MUST-HAVE (did you SEE what it says? #wearallthebabies! Yes. I want 5 of them. lol.And yes. The carrier would be amazing, too lol.). Staying hydrated with Eyla’s insulated water bottles are such a great choice! Tons of options for both kids AND adults and come in a range of glass, non-toxic plastic, and stainless steel! I added in a great inexpensive duffle bag from Target for carrying both yours and baby’s things in! And I don’t know if you are aware, but LUSH has the most AMAZING anti-chaffing powders/deoderants ever. (okok, my personal opinion but seriously. One bottle lasts a looong time, and it makes your skin so silky on those hot days! And smells ah-may-zing.). ThinkBaby Sunscreen in SPF50+ because NOBODY wants peeling sunburned skin in summer. Ewe.

Movies In the Park

Movie In The Park

One of Portland’s favorite summer pastimes is going out to the many outdoor movie screenings at dusk around the metro area! (Pretty sure there’s even a Portlandia episode that explains this. Seriously.) I centered this look around one of the most gorgeous lightweight nursing tops from Pink Blush Maternity paired with some simple skinny jeans. (bet you can guess what sandals I’d put with these! Yup. Birks. Big shocker there. :P) Unless it’s breezy when the sun goes down (sometimes this happens) You’ll probably be looked at as the local blood bank source for the local mosquitos so I added Badger’s natural bug repellant! DEET free and doesn’t make skin freak out or make you grow a 3rd arm. Bringing snacks and liquids for everyone is tradition here and Eyla has the perfect lightweight collapsible storage containers and double-insulated water bottles and thermoses! You may have to trek a bit to find the perfect spot to watch the screen so pushing baby in an Orbitbaby stroller is such a comfortable and posh way to go! Don’t forget to grab a great blanket throw from Target and BAM. Family night at the outdoor movie in the park is a GO!

#TLBmoves Playful Fitness

by Bryan Jarrett

To express ourselves through movement we can help heal, strengthen and maintain the integrity of our physical bodies. Staying active is not just about burning calories and shedding unwanted pounds—it’s about the overall impact it can have on our lives. Even as a fitness coach, I love to keep my workouts varied and, most importantly, playful! Here are four ideas that will get you moving without the use of dumbbells, barbells, or treadmills!

1. Raid the toy aisle at your local drugstore! The other day I was at my local drugstore to buy charcoal for the grill. I spotted all of these summer toys for the backyard on clearance. My intuition drove me to say YES to a $4 Skyball game and the result was a lot of fun! Any game will do for this idea (Badminton, Horseshoe/Ring Toss, etc.) Play a few rounds for 20-30min. Then say hello to your elevated heart rate, improved coordination, and have fun!

2. Walk to your local park and add a sensible workout: The walk to the park can be part of your workout. The other part can be a resistance band workout once you get there. All you need are a couple of resistance bands and something secure to wrap your band around. Circuit these four exercises as one round. Aim to perform 2-3 rounds.

  • Wide Grip Rows: These are awesome for our posture and alignment of the spine. First, secure the band. Then, take the handles and walk the band back until it is tight. Pull the handles apart and bring the elbows to the side into a table top position. Make sure the shoulders stay down the entire time to minimize neck tension. Do 15-20 reps.TLBmove Bryan Jarrett Resistance bands
  • Chest Press: Place the band in the same position as the Row. This time face a way from the handles. Start with the band at shoulder height with elbows flexed into a table top position. Then push the handles together while keeping your shoulders down. Do 15-20 reps.TLBmoves TLBmoves Bryan Resistance Bands stretch
  • Core twist: Insert one handle into the loop of the other. Pull one handle away from the pole to create a knot in the band. Stand with feet shoulder width apart. Facing to one side, grab the handle and hold it away from the body with the elbows flexed. Then twist to the side. Control the band as your arms come back to center. Limit your range of motion if you have any limitations in your back/spine. Do. 8-10 reps on each side.TLBmoves Bryan Jarrett
  • Bicep Curl: Stand with feet together on the band for lighter resistance. Stand with feet shoulder width apart for heavier resistance. Keep your elbows tucked into the sides of the body while maintaining a strong grip on the handles. Do 15-20 reps.TLBmoves Bryan Resistance bands arm curls

3. DANCE. A simple step-touch can put you back in touch with feeling good. You owe it to yourself to play your favorite album, lower the blinds (or not), and just dance. Challenge yourself to dance with no judgment for at least 15-20 mins. You don’t need to be great. Participation is the new winning!! Also, video dance games (ie: Dance Central) provide great opportunities to laugh and move together with the whole family.

4. The Fitness Toy Chest: Try these fitness toys to get your heart rate up. You could even circuit these items for a fun and treadmill-free cardio workout!

Gliders: These look like giant furniture movers! You can slide around your house as your do squats, lunges, and core-training work. I recommend the ones here.

Hula hoops: Go ahead and dig it out of the garage and get those hips moving!!

Agility Cones and Ladders: These are great and inexpensive. Although, you could use anything around the house as distance markers to create your own challenge course.

Jump Ropes: These are very effective at getting the heart rate up with very little equipment. Jump in!

However you do it, get moving and model for your children how being active can be fun and healthy. Taking care of your health is an important part of taking your family, they deserve to have you healthy!

If you want encouragement in your own journey of developing and maintaining healthy active family habits, join the #TLBmoves Facebook group and don’t miss out on the Joovy, ThinkSport ThinkBaby, and Tula giveaway to help you get moving!
