Party Like a Leaky Part 4 – International Edition

theleakyb@@b5 min read

The Leaky Boob is turning 5 years old and we’re celebrating ALL MONTH LONG! And this week the party is going international to include all the readers in the 173 countries where TheLeakyBoob.com is read.

To celebrate we’re collecting and sharing your stories along with collecting some of our favorite maternity, breastfeeding, and baby products to give as gifts to YOU Leakies. Each week our celebration includes a different birthday bash bundle of prizes from our favorite brands, presents for Leakies. AND we’re growing!

Some of us aren’t breastfeeding or bottle-feeding any more (and you thought it was going to last forever) but you’re still a part of our community and you’re still nourishing and loving your family so we’ve grown to expand two more communities where we can talk about our highs and lows of that journey in a safe, judgment-free environment. Over on BeyondMoi.com we talk a lot about, well, everything, specially about parenting and relationships. OurStableTable.com invites everyone to find a seat at the table embracing that sometimes there’s a little wobble in one of our legs, making room for allergies, and creatively nourishing our whole selves with recipes and a lot of honest conversation.

Last, but not least, we have launched our newsletter which brings together TLB, Beyond Moi, and OST, with exclusive special features not available anywhere else, giveaways, round ups, and more from the community. Our first newsletter and sign-ups available here

Our family is growing and we’re happy to share it with you!

I just subscribed, so I am not sure what was in the first 2 issues. I would like to see women who are trying to breastfeed celebrated, especially those who have donated to other babies, or have not been able to exclusively breastfeed for whatever reason, but continue to try.

Encouragement and education on breastfeeding will help many parents and soon to be parents. From my experience people are dumbfounded when they know I’m still breastfeeding my toddler. I try to do it discreetly in a baby carrier however some people get nosy and peep through the hood. It doesn’t discourage me since I know I’m going to go with my child’s lead on when he’s ready to wean. But I don’t want him to see their reaction and take it as a bad thing on what he’s doing.

I loved reading in the recent newsletter about the changes that have come with a nursing toddler. It made me think back to my own nursing experience and the vast difference of nursing a newborn versus a two year old. People always questioned why she was still nursing. I loved it. I loved that I didn’t have to guess, she told me what she wanted. It was different, but so beautiful.

From the first newsletter I liked that you had a model search calling. Not that it was a model search but that it was about being confident no matter your size. I would like to see the newsletter shorter. It was a bit long especially around the recipe part. Condense the scroll factor is what I am getting at. I hope you also got the name part right at the beginning or will get it right. Right now it is just code. I’m excited for the next newsletter you guys did an excellent first one! Keep up the good work!!

I just started reading your newsletter but I saw you at mommycon Chicago and would love to see everything you talked about there. And keeping us up to date on useful nursing/parenting/baby products.

    April 23, 2015

I’d like to read stories from moms about their own experiences. For example, I’m a mom of 5 who attempted to breastfeed each child but only successfully surpassed the 3 week mark with my youngest, who is also my only daughter. All my boys were lactose intolerant (one had a severe milk allergy) AND terrible reflux. Now with my daughter, I never imagined nursing past a year, but here she is 2 1/2 years old and going strong. My biggest obstacle with her (aside from the seemingly inevitable cases of mastitis) was having to eliminate things from my diet to figure out why my breastmilk seemed to upset her tummy. It turned out to be some sort of intolerance/allergy to any and all artificial sugars!! Something many women may not even consider. We can all help each other in ways we may not even realize.

I’ve been part of The Leaky Boob since December 2010. I’ve learned so much about breastfeeding and I’m proud to say that both my boys have been breastfed past 1 year (little one turned one year on 22 April). I haven’t read any newsletter but I’m excited to receive them.

  • Michelle
    April 23, 2015

I would like to see more of getting the message out that breastfeeding isn’t always easy for everyone and confidence is key. From the minute we give birth, there is a lot of pressure. I had very well meaning nurses but I put so much time focusing on what they said I “should be doing” instead of enjoying my baby and the experience. Luckily I figured that out soon but I know lots of women that gave up too soon. And that’s okay too, if that’s their choice but when you want to breastfeed and feel you have to give up, that makes me sad.

I’m so excited about this giveaway!

I had latch issues and exclusively pumped for a couple of months after a cesarean. It was a heartbreaking journey, and I felt unsupported and like I was failing. I am now pregnant with baby #2 and looking forward to the birth of my second son in July, and confident that I have the support (through sites like yours and in person) to have a different path with this wee boy– and also the confidence to know that whatever the outcome, I am not a failure!

I just subscribed, so I’m not sure about the last issues, but I love reading about breastfeeding. With my first, I only planned on breastfeeding for 6 months, but because of useful sites like this, I learned about extended feeding and breastfed for 18 months with her, 18 months with my second, and 5 months and still going with my 3rd and last. I love that you can help spread the word, and possibly inform more women about the benefits of breastfeeding.

    April 24, 2015

I am new to your newsletter, but would like to see a focus on those of us moms who would exclusively breastfeed but for whatever reason end up not being able to. Personally, my son had a tongue tie at birth that was corrected and things improved at one week, but then at 4 months he was not gaining well and had to start supplementing. I felt horrible guilt at the time, but now I accept it, breastfeed as much as possible, and he is doing well.

    April 24, 2015

I know you have done a lot on extended nursing, but it’s what relates to me most right now so I’d love to see more! I work in healthcare (pediatrics) and it is thankfully the normal to go until one year. This is great and I know much different than a lot of places. But technically you aren’t covered to continue pumping at work past a year and everyone I know at work has stopped nursing at 1 year. My first stopped just shy of 2 1/2 on her own and I’m letting my 16 month old self wean as well. Because of shear guilt that I was inconveniencing coworkers, right at 1 year I switched to just morning and night. Articles discussing dealing with that transition time are most helpful to me.

Hi! Thank you so much for bringing awareness and love to breastfeeding mothers. You have inspired many. Myself included.

My son was born with severe heart defects and trisomy 21 (down syndrome). He spent the first 9 weeks in the hospital enduring multiple surgeries and procedures. He was tube fed a special formula due to post op complications. Multiple doctors, surgeons, nurses, and even LC’s and PT’s/OT’s all told me he would never even take a bottle. Let alone latch to my breast. Well, October 21st he was cleared for breast milk. We tried bottles to no avail. I had been pumping every two hours round the clock to ensure I would have ample supply if he could ever have my milk. I put him to my breast and he didn’t do anything. I was heart broken. And terrified. We tubed his feed. A few hours later we tried again. Still nothing. We tubed another feed. I went and bought a nipple shield. That night he latched. And ate. From my breast. And he hasn’t stopped since! He is almost nine months and still EBF. We ditched the shield almost three months ago. Next month will be our 6 month nursiversary. We have no plans of stopping any time soon.

Thank you for all of your hard work and inspiration. I knew other women had been through difficult situations as well from following your page and I knew we could feed the way we hoped. So again, many thanks.

The first 2 went to my husband’s email. His response is great. With a confused face he asked why he was receiving Leaky boob newsletters! Lol He took it in stride and we had a nice conversation. I’ve bfd a combined 6yrs thus far, with #4 on the way. He assured me he would forward the next newsletter to myself. I look forward to reading it. i love the community of it all! This is my second time around with breastfeeding, and even though it’s been MUCH easier than the last one, I have thought about quitting early on. Now with pumping while at work, I worry all the time if I’m doing it the ‘right’ way.

    April 24, 2015

I didn’t know there had already been two issues of this news letter! I am very exited and looking forward to the newer editions coming up. I lived in Peru for a short time and was pleasantly surprised with the acceptance of public breastfeeding and the way in which pregnant women and people with small children where often given priority treatment (as in getting ahead of the line at the back and such), and no one got angry about it!. Coming back to the U.S. I miss that special treatment and would like to see a little of what other moms around the world experience when it comes to breastfeeding in public (or not) and what motherhood in general is like for them.

    April 26, 2015

I just signed up for the newsletter, but I think it might be good to offer support to NICU moms in regards to breastfeeding and exclusively pumping. My daughter was born at 26 weeks and spent 4.5 months in the NICU. I pumped for 8 months before I had to stop for health reasons. I felt that the lactation consultants had given up on me. When my daughter came home, I nursed her on my own several times, but her reflux was too severe and she has extremely slow growth, so is still on high calorie formula at 13 months. She does get some breast milk from the deep freeze now. I wish that I had more support during that time. Pumping was very difficult for me.

I can confidently say that without the support of pages and websites like TLB so many women would not have the resources they need to be successful with breastfeeding and gentle parenting. It is imperative that resources like this be continually provided for woman and men to become more knowledgeable and empowered. My family and my hubby’s family are very uneducated when it comes to breastfeeding and gentle parenting. I really feel that my success with parenting and breastfeeding have solely been on the constant reminders and education from TLB that I am doing things correctly. I do not think I would be breastfeeding my 2 year old daughter with out the resources you provide all day, every day. And I know I’m not the only one who is being helped from your resources. Thank you for al that you do for women and families all over the world! 🙂

I just signed up so I haven’t seen the first 2 newsletters yet. However, from reading the other comments it seems like it is very useful and encouraging. As I am about to start my breastfeeding journey as soon as baby is born any day now, and it seems like I will have lots of questions and concerns along the way, I look forward to reading it!

I would like to see features on helping people understand that you don’t have to be hardcore about one way or another. For example, cloth diapering. Encouraging family’s that they can try it or just do it at home if they aren’t comfortable doing cloth exclusively. The same can go to encouraging parents with breastfeeding.

I’m happy for people like you who encourage breastfeeding! I’m on my 2nd baby and while I was still pregnant with him, I thought of only breastfeeding for maximum of 6 months. But now I can see how breastfeeding not only keeps him healthy but also keeps that bond between us. I was extremely saddened when I had to undergo emergency surgery and couldnt breastfeed him. now I am recovering and I’d love to breastfeed him as long as I can!

    April 29, 2015

The whole newsletter was so fun! It has been a WHILE since I read through more than the first couple of lines of a newsletter. I didn’t even realize these were the first two newsletters until just *now* – I kept thinking, “How have I been missing this newsletter all this time? This is FANTASTIC!”
I’m not sure what makes it so great. The humor/satire mixed with helpful information, recipes, real-life stories, etc…just a fab combo. Thanks 🙂

I second this! It’s a completely different challenge for those of us that work outside the home.

  • Trista
    April 29, 2015

I LOVED the editorial in this week’s newsletter about all the different ways her babies weaned. My first two also weaned much earlier than I would have preferred (at 15 and 14 months, respectively) because my milk supply would completely dry up at the end of my first trimester with my next pregnancy. My third baby didn’t make it to his birthday, so I never got the opportunity to nurse him. I’m actually enjoying this little break of having my body to myself right now, while I’m waiting to heal before trying for our fourth (and last) baby (though my boobs are just GONE…what’s with that?!). I’m really hoping that things work out with our last and that I’m able to nurse for at least two years (which is a challenge, since I work full-time outside the home). There’s just something so special about those cuddles while they nurse!

  • Ashley
    April 29, 2015

I just recently signed up and have only had a chance to read this recent newsletter. I absolutely loved it! I really enjoyed the fact that it’s supportive no matter how far anyone has made it in breastfeeding. I didn’t do too well with my first, only made it three months while supplementing, I just couldn’t get the hang of it and had no support. I am currently breastfeeding our second son and have made it to nine months, but I a have been having the hardest time with sleep since we brought him home. I would love to see a newsletter about how to get a better routine with the attachment of nursing. How to get babies to sleep more than an hour without having to be attached.

  • Georgia Gonzalez

What to expect with newborn cluster feeding info helped me to get through that time without worrying!

I would love info on getting a baby to take a bottle (if it’s already on here sorry! I must have missed it). I’m a WAHM so I’m with my baby most of the time but it would nice to be able to leave her for a little bit of I need to. Thank you this blog is great!!

    April 29, 2015

Only signed up recently so not sure on first 2 issues but it would be great to see some more real stories like people who started off with complications breastfeeding and still succeeded to continue feeding. Or stories just about the journey as it’s very worrying for a new mum whether they will be able to do or not and it will show them that everyone is different and there might be hurdles to get over but it can be done in the end

    April 29, 2015

    April 30, 2015

I would love to see more funny things “when breastfeeding goes bad” (not bad as but those things that happen to all of us!) also maybe more on staying strong against nurses when you are in hospital. With my first the nurse gave me bad advice and I wasn’t able to nurse.

  • Jessica Kellaway
    April 30, 2015

I would love to read more about encouraging moms to breast feed without sounding like that person that everyone rolls their eyes at! Is that possible ?! HA! Also I would love to learn about helping encourage moms to get milk donations and more of a support network there & maybe encouraging moms TO donate to other moms! I often read about moms that have to supplement and they are horrified, I think I would feel angry with my body personally. I help one mom and donate my milk to her since she can’t produce enough. I wish I could donate more to other moms!

  • Suzanne Anderson

    April 30, 2015

I Wish that there was more for women who suddenly have to stop breast feeding due to illness or the need to take medications and want to resume breastfeeding when they’re done taking the medication. I had complications after giving birth and every lactation consultant I called was too busy to answer or get me an appointment and the la leche league in my area didn’t know what to do. I bfd for 7 months and I had to stop for 2 and my son never went back. It was heartbreaking
