Breastfeeding can be such a sacred time in our lives. While we cherish the breastfeeding journey, it is rare in our culture to commemorate the end of breastfeeding with little more than a note in the baby book. How this pregnancy has impacted my breastfeeding relationship with Smunchie. Dealing with the reality of a difficult pregnancy and the repercussions it has had on my breastfeeding goals.
When we started out, and for the first few weeks of M’s life, our goal was always “tomorrow”. We overcame initial difficulties (which I won’t go into here), tomorrows became todays became yesterdays, and soon our goal was 6 months. In the blink of an eye 6 months came and went and we revised our goal to 1 year. This in turn passed, as did 18 months, and now we find ourselves a short few weeks from 2 years!
Socially, breastfeeding gets a lot of lip service (the “best” for baby!) but the cold shoulder in practice. It’s just not normal to see breastfeeding. So it’s no wonder there is a lot of misinformation and negative attitudes about what normal breastfeeding looks like. Add in a toddler or preschooler at the breast or relatives set to stick fingers full of whip cream in a 3 month old’s mouth and ignorance can become a damaging motive for unsupportive support.
For the last week I haven’t liked breastfeeding Smunchie. Not just not enjoyed it but skin crawling, hair pulling, hiding in the bathroom couldn’t stand it. I can’t tell you how much I’ve hesitated to admit this. Before you go running for the outfit find that makes the boobies completely inaccessible to your nursling let me explain what keeps me going and my tips to make it a little easier.
