What's in Human Milk?
What makes human milk so great anyway?
A lot, actually, I’m glad you asked. Brace yourself, info dump incoming.
“Breastfeeding provides unmatched health benefits for babies and mothers. It is the clinical gold standard for infant feeding and nutrition, with breast milk uniquely tailored to meet the health needs of a growing baby. We must do more to create supportive and safe environments for mothers who choose to breastfeed.”
Dr. Ruth Petersen, director of CDC’s Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity
The composition of human milk is impressive and is one time when an ingredients list that is as long as your arm is actually a good thing. This liquid is chock full of good stuff for a growing infant. Over 200 components have been identified in human milk including macro and micro nutrients. Everything a tiny little body needs to grow all the important bits like their brain, digestive system, vital organs, strong bones, and, well, their whole body. Protein, carbohydrates, fat, water, and essential vitamins and minerals like vitamins A, the Bs, potassium, magnesium, and zinc, to name a few.
If a baby needs it, human milk has it.
