In some ways we have come so far in how women are treated and viewed in society but in other ways women, particularly mothers, are dismissed as their real value being only in their appeal to the opposite sex. I wonder if we’ve lost something. Then I wonder what that means for me and I’m only 14 years old.
While breastfeeding my 8 month old in one of the cafes of the Flamingo Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas I was asked by a manager to cover. What happened next is a model for all companies that find themselves in such an unfortunate misstep. And a look at the irony that seeing a baby breastfeeding was what some people considered scandalous in Las Vegas.
In the midst of my banymooning some aspects of being the mother of a breastfeeding newborn have really stood out to me and given me a few laughs. Which is good because it’s either laugh or cry sometimes!
The dual nature of the human breast is one that we have a really, really hard time with in most Westernized countries. Breastfeeding moms are asked to cover up or kicked out of various places, yet we use bikini clad models to sell any number of things. With the vastly sexualized nature of the breast, is it any wonder that I have client after client who is concerned that nursing will feel sexual to her, or that she won’t be able to still be attractive if she’s nursing?
Socially, breastfeeding gets a lot of lip service (the “best” for baby!) but the cold shoulder in practice. It’s just not normal to see breastfeeding. So it’s no wonder there is a lot of misinformation and negative attitudes about what normal breastfeeding looks like. Add in a toddler or preschooler at the breast or relatives set to stick fingers full of whip cream in a 3 month old’s mouth and ignorance can become a damaging motive for unsupportive support.
Breastfeeding can reduce a woman’s risk of breast cancer but it isn’t a guarantee. What you need to know as a breastfeeding mom about the most aggressive kind of breast cancer and why it’s important to know now.
