Heart to Heart Breast Care Bamboobies Giveaway

Breasts are amazing. They can feed babies, they can tell a woman where she is in her fertility cycle, breasts can adjust the milk they make according to the specific needs of the baby (or babies) they are feeding. Breasts can comfort, have fun, and look stunning. Breasts can also get sick and even become deadly. Breast cancer impacts about 1 in 8 women. Taking care of our health and of our breasts is one of the ways we can do our part to be present with our children for as long as possible.

Which is why we have teamed up with Bamboobies to remind moms that even while they are breastfeeding, it is important to be educated and to take action steps in breast cancer prevention, detection, and treatment. You can read the sponsored article here. While we can’t come feel your boobs for you (do it!), we can at least send some of the soft care options Bamboobies has for moms. You matter moms, we love you, take care of your boobs!

Bamboobies Mother’s Day Giveaway

Mother’s Day preparations are in the air!  Little hands carefully drawing, cutting, glueing, and coloring, getting ready to surprise Mommy with a handmade card, a kiss and a huge hug.  Bamboobies, one of TLB’s longest standing sponsors, wants to help celebrate and support mothers everywhere, and is offering our Leakies a giveaway as a means to do just that!  Read below, as Kerry, owner of Bamboobies, shares a bit of her heart with all of us.

 Kerry

TLB:  Happy early Mother’s Day, Kerry!  What is your Mother’s Day wish for all the mothers reading this?

Kerry: That they get support from other mothers and have the pleasure of supporting other mothers. Not just this holiday or this weekend or month but all year every year.

TLB:  What is your Mother’s Day wish for yourself?  😉

Kerry:  A weekend away with just my husband and the waves – and another weekend of hugs, books, simple home-cooked meals and gardening with my littles. Can I ask for two totally separate things? YES!  Mother’s Day isn’t a day – it’s a year. It’s a lifetime of choices and tough prioritizations. Even as my husband and I plan to get away, we are feeling wistful about how much we’ll miss our 3 littles…  That’s a multi-faceted life – it’s never easy.

TLB:  What would you like TLB Readers to know about Bamboobies?

Kerry: I was fortunate to have a very well-paying job that I felt good about when I had my first baby – as a residential real estate agent. I was my own boss, had the pleasure of helping people with a very important aspect of their lives and made good money doing it. When I figured out how to make a better nursing pad and thought of the funny name “Bamboobies” I left real estate to start the business of making better, healthier products for new nursing mothers.

Large consumer product companies can’t be bothered with making low-profit products truly great or more healthy or eco-conscious so there was a neat opportunity in the market.  It took me 6 months to design a better nursing pad, but it is a breakthrough that the larger companies never would have made and mothers everywhere would still be leaking through their all-cotton pads!  I had a creative urge, I had a sense of responsibility to improve products that I felt needed it, and I obeyed an internal challenge to do something I hadn’t done before. After nursing pads, we have been so excited to make similar improvements to nursing shawls, nipple balm, nursing bras and there is more good stuff on the way!

What I’d like to pass on is a message that Bamboobies isn’t just a business. It’s a passion and commitment that’s almost inexplicable – even to my husband and even my children some days. Our small staff of 6 women and I couldn’t be more committed to making better functioning products to support new nursing mothers, the planet and our business partners.  And we’re having fun while doing it!

TLB:  Bamboobies being in the shape of a heart is no accident, as you really care about struggling new mothers. What is the message this it trying to send?

Kerry:  I did pick the heart-shape as a functional design – but also as a message. I was shocked to find out how difficult breast-feeding was with my first!  I thought that after birth it was all downhill – and that nursing would be naturally easy. I think this is a common misperception – and it isn’t a secret that is helpful to new mothers at all!

And this is why we have supported The Leaky Boob for so many years – it’s the ultimate crowd-sourced resource exactly when and where mothers need it.

I had every issue in the book and did my best to support new mama friends one-on-one. Now it makes me so happy to be able to support new mothers all over the world.

Bamboobies’ Valentine’s Day Giveaway

TLB sponsor, Bamboobies, would like to wish you a very happy Valentine’s Day!

fbsq.ILvGvawys

In a recent conversation with Kerry, creator of Bamboobies, we both admitted to having a soft spot for this particular Holiday, and with her staple heart-shaped breast pads, what better way for Bamboobies to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with a giveaway!  And if their heart-shape isn’t enough to inspire you, consider this: Bamboobies are manufactured by women in the US and are fair-trade to boot.  That’s enough to warm my heart.  Kerry shares with us about her breastfeeding journey in a short interview below, followed by your chance to enter this heart-filled giveaway.

Jessica and Kerry

TLB:  When did you start Bamboobies and why?

Kerry:    When I had my first baby, I was a BIG leaker – and was quite frustrated with the pad options available but didn’t think to do anything about it for several years…  I was very frustrated by the bulkiness of washable pads  – and I often leaked through them. I used disposables when I really wanted to be sure I didn’t leak but hated the scratchiness, chemicals, and what a waste of money they were.

When I had my second child three years ago I discovered the amazing softness of bamboo fabric in her cloth diapers. Strange as it sounds – and it was – I began stuffing some washable bamboo velour wipes in my shirt!  They were super soft and didn’t have have the cold and clammy feeling of cotton when wet.  My “A-HA” moment came when I thought of the funny name for a better bamboo pad – I trademarked the name Bamboobies at midnight after thinking of it!

The name came easily but it took many months of trial and error to create a really good product.  I wanted to source locally and make something that wouldn’t leak or show through – all big challenges, but I persevered!  I didn’t want to build a company around a gimmick – I wanted to help other women like me and  to create a great product.

Three years ago this March we sold our first pads in a local retailer here in Boulder and our product line has now grown to 5 products and our pads and nipple balm are sold in over 800 stores, primarily in the US and Canada including all US Babies R Us Stores.  We still run our business out of my basement and garage and Bamboobies pads, nipple balm, bras and nursing shawls are all made here in Colorado in fair-trade facilities.

It’s been a really fun and creative process building the business, products and team to this point and getting so many great notes from women all over about their love of our products.

TLB:  Every year you do a freebies giveaway that just costs shipping, that must cost you a lot, why is this so important to you?

Kerry:  It’s fun – and it’s important to get our samples to women who need them.  Our products are expensive because they’re made of very high quality fabrics that are certified organic or sustainable and they’re made in the US in fair-trade women-run facilities.  They also just ‘seem’ expensive because they’re being compared with yucky disposable paper and chemical-filled disposables. When women see and feel for themselves how much better our products are, we hope they’ll do the math and see that buying a high-quality reusable product over a disposable one makes economic sense…  We’ve just launched our products in Babies R Us across the US and so we’re making this month’s giveaway twice as big as we’ve done in the past to try to create more brand awareness.  We typically process 10 retail orders per day – we’ve gotten over 4000 orders in 3 days – Wild Times!

TLB:  The heart shape is fitting for this month of love but it’s also a wonderful design for your breast pads (I wear mine upside down), how did you come to that?

Kerry:  A clothing designer friend suggested it – the dip in the top of the heart acts as a dart to dynamically cup your changing boobie size.  It’s cute but functional too: I didn’t like the lumpiness and circles visible through my shirt when I wore the thick cotton washable pads. We also don’t use a thick edge stitch in an effort to avoid having hearts show through your shirt!

TLB:  You’re so laid back and easygoing, Kerry, how does that carry over into your business?  How about your parenting?

Kerry:  My low blood pressure is genetic but I do generally have a very positive outlook on life. I also try to blow a lot of things off – I choose my battles.  I’m very very lucky – that’s a fact but also a belief that I work to manifest.  Sound too hippie? It is – but it’s also true.  I’m a very determined person and I’m focused on the underlying goodness of people and I think this helps in business and with kiddos.  I have 3 children aged five and under so my patience gets pushed to its limits pretty often, but I try to focus on the good and the things I can change.

TLB:  What do you <3 about breastfeeding?

Kerry:  I love that it’s an amazing discovery that women have to look forward to – a surprise they didn’t know was coming when they were getting close to their due date. Some parts of this new experience can be painful physically and emotionally in the beginning but the sweet, close and bonding parts are amazing.

After I had my first I had a lot of difficulties getting started nursing because I had enormous supply and overactive letdown. I didn’t think I’d last a week but I’ve nursed through two pregnancies and next month will start my seventh year straight. I hadn’t changed a diaper before having my first baby – I knew there was a lot to learn about children.  I’d certainly never nursed but I didn’t even think about the alternative until it was difficult.

I’ve learned so much about my children as individuals through nursing – and about myself.  This has been a big surprise – and a wonderful one to embrace.

Bamboobies Giveaway

I double heart LOVE Bamboobies breast pads and I double sparkly heart love Kerry Gilmartin, the creator of Bamboobies.  From our shared sisterhood of sea salt almonds in dark chocolate to our obsession with bamboo, Kerry inspires and encourages me as a supporter of breastfeeding women.  Read on to hear from this woman of quality with a heart and passion for encouraging women and providing them comfort along their breastfeeding journey.  This generous giveaway from Kerry is sure to make 3 lucky winners comfortably taken care of for their own breastfeeding journey.  I’m so grateful for the support of Bamboobies for TLB and the friendship of Kerry.

TLB:  What should TLB readers know about Bamboobies?

Kerry:  Bamboobies is a small mom-run business based in Boulder, Colorado, dedicated to making better, more eco-friendly breastfeeding support products.  Our products are made by women making a real living wage (with insurance!) in Colorado and are made of the highest quality, most eco-friendly fabrics and packaging.  Bamboobies nursing pads, were our first creation, followed by the Chic Nursing Shawl, and Boob-ease Therapy pillows, and Natural Nipple Balm. More new products on the way too – keep in touch!

TLB:  How did Bamboobies come about?

Kerry:  I was nursing my second child – and was very leaky, esp when letting down on the other side.  Frustrated by leaky cotton washable pads, I’d often use disposables with the plastic backing to be sure I didn’t leak through. These got expensive and also looked just as silly through my clothing as the washables did.  I thought it was just another tough thing about being a new mom but never thought I could do anything about it…  I was learning about cloth diapers when I discovered the amazing softness of Bamboo and began putting little bamboo velour wipes in my bra – looked ridiculous but ohh so soft!  When I thought of the funny name Bamboobies I decided to do something about it!  Too funny…  So – I began with the help of my step-mother, a seamstress, to design a thinner, less visible and leak-proof pad. Our heart-shape regular pad was first, then came our ultra-thick overnight pad.

TLB:  What is your favorite part of running a company that creates products to support breastfeeding moms?

Kerry:  The ‘love notes’ we get every day from new moms who are happy they’ve discovered our pads, or therapy pillows…  I suffered from leaking – but even more from mastitis. When I think our nipple balm or therapy pillows have helped someone get through the tough parts of nursing in the beginning so they have a happy nursing relationship, I’m thrilled.

TLB:  How long did you breastfeed your own little ones and was that different than you originally planned?

Kerry:  I didn’t think I’d make it past the ‘mandatory’ 2 weeks – I had forceful letdown, clogged ducts and mastitis many times.  I was happy when I was able to work through issues with my first and continued nursing him until my second was born 22 months later.  I nursed her until my third was born 24 months later and we’re still going strong 5.5 years later!  I had some tough times during pregnancy and teething but am very happy to have had such great nursing relationships through toddler-hood with all three kiddos. My son is 1.5 yrs old now and is very attached so we’ll keep at it until he’s ready to quit….
