Leaky Boob Looks: Nurturing YOU

I know. You know. Mother’s Day is almost here. This particular day can come with a mixed bag of emotions for some of us. Whether it’s loss, joy, infertility, longing, expectation, abundance, joy, anticipation or loneliness. Mothering is hard. Being a human can be hard. BEING requires so much of us…sometimes more than we think we have. Days are sometimes met with an exhausted yawn and aching bones after multiple nights feeding a little one or tending the wake of a tummy bug (that ALWAYS shows up at night, it seems). We end up feeling poured out like a pitcher of water over dry sand. Sometimes, all I can think of is how EMPTY I feel. Sacrificing, pouring out, mending, caring, nurturing. I get lost in the foray. Then? I realize that I need to be nurtured. I need to be cared for. I need to be filled. I MUST be nurtured. I need to be kind to myself. We are, each of us, unique. There are things whether they are small or big, that nurture us. Whether it’s a person, a moment, a ritual, a prayer, an object. This week, I want to focus on looks for you that are rooted in simple comfort. In loveliness. In empowerment and loving ourselves and these mama bodies that we are constantly using to nurture those around us. We love you, Leaky! Let us be empowered and nurtured so that we can empower and nurture those around us. <3

Leaky Look #1: Lovely Mama

I wanted this look to center around feeling lovely and strong from within while being texturally soft and versatile. This is the Ready, Set, Vacay Dress from Modcloth. Easy feeding access, comes in a great range of sizes, flattering lines and great bodice detailing. I added the uber-soft Seashell Pink nursing bra from Nursing Bra Express, a structured chambray blazer, and some great leather gladiator sandals. The leather handbag IS actually a diaper bag crafted by Oemibaby-a great wardrobe piece you can transition with from moming to self-caring seamlessly! The accessories are handmade from Etsy. What better than to finish off this look with the gorgeously-soft Ergo Organic baby carrier in “Dandelion.” (Yes. there are sweet dandelions printed all over it!)

Leaky Look #2: Comfy Glam

This look reminded me of one of my favorite magazines (Dwell). This top is the Black Tilla top from Purple Impression (my newest obsession! Seriously. Their mission, brand, ethically-stitched clothing, breastfeeding friendly…and the causes they are involved with in supporting women. Read more HERE.). I paired the top with some simple nursing tanks from Target, comfy harem pants from Gap, Arizona Birkenstocks, and a Storksak bag in “Noa” from Nordstrom.com. A Beautiful brass medallion necklace from Modcloth compliments the hand embroidered sleeves on the top and my FAVORITE Tekhni woven wrap in Delta Gothic makes this gorgeous look chic, functional, extremely comfortable, and versatile for various activities/lifestyles.

Leaky Look #3: Zen Mama

One of the best ways we can nurture ourselves is by challenging/caring for our body! This look is centered around a pink workout top from Belabumbum, a blue bamboo cardigan, and the adjustable “3 reasons support bra” from Title Nine. Yoga is a wonderful way to center yourself and strengthen your body and mind, so I added in this lovely Yoga bag from REI and a colorful Girasol woven wrap from Paxbaby for a local baby and me yoga sesh! Simple things like Earth Mama Angel Baby lip balm and water in a double-insulated ThinkSport water bottle are perfect ways to invest in taking care of yourself and helping you to thrive in a healthy state of being.

Jen and Carrie, two moms from Canada, came together to form a partnership for their business, The Naked Nursing Tank, in order to address the issue so many moms face…the dreaded exposure of the post-partum belly when lifting up their shirt to nurse their baby. These two moms wanted to offer breastfeeding mothers a choice in nursing wear that allowed for more flexibility in wardrobe, more confidence when nursing in public, and an affordable option that fits EVERY body type.

TLB: Last time we talked, you two and Naked Nursing Tank were featured on the Marilyn Denis show. It was really exciting to see you guys on TV! What kinds of changes have come about thanks to that experience? Be honest, did it go to your head at all? 🙂

Jen and Carrie: Hahaha! It definitely didn’t go to our heads, almost the opposite actually! We are so grateful for the exposure that the Marilyn Denis show has given the tank nation-wide that we feel extremely humbled and honoured to have attended it! We have been able to outsource all of our packing and shipping and are currently working with a rep for our Canadian retailers. We also have a new product in the prototype phase and are looking forward to having that on the market come the beginning of the new year!

TLB: Your nursing tanks are specifically designed to keep moms from exposing their sides or tummies while nursing their babies. I hear that you have just launched a line of tanks specifically for Plus Size moms. What inspired you to develop this particular product?

Jen and Carrie: We are super excited about our new PLUS SIZE line. We’re offering sizes 3X – 5X in our Luxury Black Bamboo edition and we’re truly inspired by this line. We’ve met so many moms that we’ve had the opportunity to speak with who were sharing their stories about the lack of selection in nursing wear that fit appropriately, and their options being so limited. Hearing these moms and their emotional frustrations with such limited choice shed new light on the barriers they are presented with, and inspired us to address the issue of selection and choice for all mothers of every size.

TLB: The models on your website have all tended to be rather on the slim side. Has this new product launch changed that?

Jen and Carrie: It is so liberating to be able to promote nursing for every shape and size now! We had followed the Dove commercials a few years back and found them so inspiring. We are proud to be able to cast all shapes and sizes and feel confident that our tanks will definitely fit every one of them.

TLB: You make a variety of simple and very elegant tops for expecting and nursing women. What are some of the values that you incorporate into the design of your clothing?

Christine Poirier: I design the tops for mothers who love and care for their babies, nursing them night or day, and the tops reflect these values of love and care. The materials are soft and stretchy, meant to be comforting to the mother and to the baby who will be nursing and holding on to it. Freedom is also one of the values that go in the design of the clothing. The tops are meant to provide freedom to the mothers, who can nurse anywhere, and to the babies, who can feed anywhere. The tops have practical and simple nursing openings meant to ease new moms into their new motherly task of nursing.

TLB: What kind of feedback have you received from the moms wearing your clothes?

Christine Poirier: The comments we receive are overwhelmingly positive. One of the good things about the Momzelle website is that each product has its reviews posted next to it, with little stars that help choose what’s best. Some moms wonder why they did not get one before, others say that the Momzelle nursing tops are the best nursing tops they own. One of my favorite comment came from a mom who wanted to show her newborn to her relatives in a different state. She had to fly there and she was distressed at the idea of nursing her baby next to a stranger in the plane. She received her nursing top in time for her flight and she said it saved the trip. She was very thankful. This is what we are all about: helping women feel good about breastfeeding, no matter where they are.

TLB: I know that you like to find ways to support women directly. What are some of the ways that you are involved in supporting expecting and breastfeeding women?

Christine Poirier: You should have a a look at our Facebook page! We have over 9700 fans and we post fun breastfeeding pics, jokes and inspiring quotes on a daily basis. That’s the fun bit. On the other serious side, we also have an informative section on our website and blog, where we post articles from my favorite doctor and breastfeeding specialist, Dr. Jack Newman. Outside of the web, I really like to encourage breastfeeding support groups like La Leche League and the activities that they organize. We do so by providing prizes for their events and by sponsoring them. We do the same for events that go across the board, like the yearly breastfeeding challenge (when groups across North America compete in a friendly way to get the most babies at the breast at the same time on the same day). A couple of years ago, our efforts in supporting breastfeeding women were recognized when we won the “Best Socially-Minded Business Award” from the Canadian Youth Business Foundation. We are quite proud!

Late nights in front of my computer, a messy house, and trying to pull meals together at the last minute are all daily struggles for me, but these are all sacrifices worth making for the incredible opportunity I have been blessed with to stay home with my babies while working. I typically work only when my son is asleep, in order to spend as much quality time with him as possible while he’s awake, but there are certainly moments when I’m trying frantically to multi-task, standing in the kitchen while typing an email on my laptop, on the phone with a customer, with tiny arms tugging at me from below. Breastfeeding has been a lifesaver for me when working from home…any time I need a quick distraction to make a phone call, a nursing session always guarantees at least a few minutes of quiet time

TLB: What are your favorite breastfeeding memories as a mom?

Bethany: I have been breastfeeding my son for over two years now and have continued throughout my current pregnancy, so those memories are still taking place on a daily basis. I adore the relationship I have built with my son through breastfeeding, and I could not imagine motherhood any other way. From those precious newborn days when it felt like all we did was sit and nurse and stare lovingly at one another to the chaos of nursing an active toddler who manages to nurse in positions I never thought possible, breastfeeding has truly and unquestionably been the most important aspect of my relationship with my son. I look forward to the very special experience of nursing a newborn baby again soon!

TLB: What is one tip that helped you in your breastfeeding journey that you’d like to pass on to other moms?

Bethany: There will always be challenges… but if breastfeeding is important to you, you will always find a way to overcome these challenges in order to continue your breastfeeding relationship. That being said, try not to be too hard on yourself if things don’t go the way you planned! I found that it was best not to set any unrealistic expectations for myself, or any expectations at all, for that matter, and to just do the very best that I could. I never had any specific goals as far as any length of time I would breastfeed. There was simply never any doubt in my mind as to whether or not I would breastfeed, and despite some challenges at the beginning, it became such a natural part of motherhood that it soon became impossible to even consider giving it up. During the very initial stages of breastfeeding, I remember wondering if nursing my baby would ever just feel “natural” instead of something we had to work hard at every time… and after some weeks passed, I realized it had become the most natural feeling I had ever experienced. It’s an incredible, empowering journey that I wish for every mother.
