This summer as you get outside to explore, keeping your baby close and on you can be a big help with feeding your baby. With so many different types of carriers available, there’s almost certainly an option that will work for you. Between the different brands of carriers (and some brands having more than one style, such as Tula), online support and information (such as this online chat with Paxbaby and The Leaky Boob) and retailers (where you can find many different brands in one place!), babywearing libraries, babywearing educators, and ways to purchase used; more and more families have access to figuring out what babywearing can be for them.

And that’s good news. The skin to skin contact of babywearing sends signals to your body that helps you produce milk even as you’re busy keeping up with older kids and vacation plans. There are so many benefits of babywearing, even including neurological and physical development, see more on that here. Even better, for moms feeding directly at the breast, learning how to breastfeed in a carrier can be a total game changer, making it possible to feed on the go. We think this is so important, we have a whole workshop at the Milk Conference to teach moms and support providers more about breastfeeding in the carrier. While not everybody will be comfortable breastfeeding in the carrier, having the option to do so can help remove just one more breastfeeding obstacle. Carry all the babies, feed all the babies! (On your front, just to be clear, unless you have a sense of humor and flexible breasts like this.)

Even if breastfeeding in the carrier isn’t for you or if you’re not breastfeeding directly at the breast, babywearing can be a fun and special way to care for your little one… and your toddler! (I share all about why you might want to wear your toddler and preschooler here.) Babywearing is an excellent way for non-breastfeeding partner parents to connect as well, (older siblings too, see this article for more on sibling-wearing) fostering connections and closeness in shared experience and constant snuggles. For tips on what to consider in looking for a carrier that works for you and/or your partner, check out this link to get you started.

The conversation and education about babywearing has increased, and with good reason. There are a lot of benefits of babywearing but it is important it’s done safely. This is why we are talking about it, anyone could make a mistake (including this celebrity) and babywearing safety is important. Together we can support each other in caring for our little ones.

TLB: What would you like our readers to know about Diono?

TLB: What kinds of values go into the creation of Diono products?

TLB: As a CPST, what is the one most useful piece of information that you share with parents about car seats and child safety?

Allana: There are so many, it’s hard to name just one. I say it all the time, it is so important to read the manual…slowly, carefully so you get an understanding of how to use and install the product properly. At the very least you’ll know what questions to ask when you meet with a CPST for have hands-on learning and they “teach” you how to install the car seat.

TLB: What sets the Diono Rainier Convertible (or RXT) apart from other carseats on the market today?

Allana: Hands down, the integrated full steel frame with a high rear-facing weight and forward-facing weight capacities. Plus, it could possibly be the only car seat you have to buy for your child because our convertible+boosters have a 10-12 year product life!

TLB: What is your favorite breastfeeding tip?

Allana: Regarding safety, never take baby out to breastfeed while riding in a vehicle. We never know when a crash is going to occur, so it’s best to stop somewhere safe and take care of baby while the car is not moving.

On a personal note, don’t give up so easily. Breastfeeding can be a lonely activity when you’re a new mommy. It’s not so glamorous at the start, either. It takes a while to get your groove, especially if you didn’t grow up with it being the “norm.”

The Leaky Boob is turning 5 years old and we’re celebrating ALL MONTH LONG! Baby Bee Hummingbirds Keepsakes

Time is such an interesting concept, especially for young parents. Pregnancy drags on day after day, and slows down more and more the closer you get to the birth of your baby. You have all the time in the world to get the nursery set up, select a name, and otherwise prepare for the arrival of your baby, until you suddenly realize that baby could come any day, and then there just isn’t enough time to get everything done! And once your baby arrives, those first few moments, days, and sometimes weeks, are both deliciously slow and gone so fast. Then, as you establish a new day to day routine, before you know it, your baby turns into a toddler and you wonder how on earth time could have passed so quickly! Time is far from a constant friend. How do you hold on to those precious moments with your little one?

That is the question that Amy, from Baby Bee Hummingbirds, helps moms answer all over the world, by offering to eternalize certain moments in time by crafting them into gems: your baby’s birth with a Placenta Gem, your breastfeeding relationship with a Breastmilk Gem, your little one’s first hair trim with a First Curl Gem, and more. In the short interview below, Amy tells us a bit about herself and her gems, and she is excited to offer you a chance to win a breastmilk gem in a very special giveaway.

TLB: What would you like the Leaky Boob community to know about Baby Bee Hummingbirds (BBH)?

Amy: BBH was born from my desire to capture and preserve life’s most precious memories. As a midwife and breastfeeding mumma (six years continuous breastfeeding and counting), I have a deep passion and drive to create gems that represent and honour a mother’s role as life giver and nurturer. I basically turned my “ hobby” into a world wide business. I am honoured and proud to craft my unique collection of gems, which has naturally expanded from Breastmilk Gems, to Placenta Gems, First Curl Gems, Ashes Gems, and Pet Memorial Gems.

TLB: What a neat opportunity. It’s easy to see how this would appeal to many many moms. But the idea of preserving bodily fluids or tissue could also make some people squeamish. Is there any danger to anyone’s health in producing these keepsakes?

Amy: There is absolutely no danger to anyone’s health. However I do recognize that every day I deal with individuals’ unique DNA, and I acknowledge that by ensuring all my supplies are single use only, and my preservation methods are 100% safe and risk free.

TLB: How long does the creation of these unique pieces of jewelry take?

A: All my gems are crafted in steps. The very first step is to start the unique preservation method, which takes a few days to complete. After this the gems are set, coated in a protective resin, sanded, and polished to perfection. Each gem takes an average of three hours to create over several days.

TLB: What is your favorite Breastfeeding tip?

Amy: Especially during the early (newborn months), enjoy your ability to nourish and nurture your child. Take the time to sit or lay down quietly with your nursling. It’s Mother Nature’s way of ensuring you rest often (yes even if its every 2 hours). Breathe in that baby scent and let the oxytocin (love hormone) flow, fall deeper in love with your little one, and recharge.

New Beginnings Giveaway

The main thing that all of the people in The Leaky Boob community have in common is their experience with a new beginning; in particular, the start of motherhood. Leakies come together at TLB for encouragement and support as they encounter new or different experiences with their precious little ones, to share their struggles and their victories, their pain and their joy. And perhaps most importantly: to know that they are not alone.

Carrie and Jen of The Naked Nursing Tank are familiar with this new beginning. They understand and value the need for support in new experiences. Which is a big part of why they they support TLB through as sponsors. They enjoy supporting moms.

Another new beginning they have experienced is that of starting their business, The Naked NursingTank.
